Somewhere in the bowels of the Department of Health and Human Services someone ought to start work on a smoking commercial.

Not an anti-smoking commercial. Something to present smoking, shortness of breath and lung cancer in a positive, even genial, light. It's in the national interest.

Though Mr. Pruden is writing tongue-in-cheek, the logic of his argument is the logical culmination of government's new use of the tobacco companies as cash cows. There's nothing in this world that eats cash faster than governments, and they can be counted on to protect their sources.

As for the "Boo-Hoo? Sue! Sue!" mentality that's overtaken the whole country, perhaps the less said, the better. I never would have expected the courts to disassemble our legal system this way, but that's what you get when lawyers and judges, who are as vain and power-hungry as anyone else in the system, are allowed to plunder unchecked.

Tongue in cheek or not, this man has no love, or even tolerance, for smokers.
The tone of the article is anti-smoking all the way. Just because he slips one in about the government once in a while doesn't mean that he wouldn't see ALL the smokers quit tomorrow if he could.
The only thing that he really gets right, imo, is about the lawyers and judges.
